Goal(s): Gain experience regarding when to select the 'Area Between the Mean and Z' table to determine the area under the curve.
How: Each time you will be shown two scenarios. Pick the option where the relevant area under the curve would be greater than .500 (i.e., involves more than half the population). Make 30 quick decisions, with immediate feedback.

An "area under the curve" problem can involve proportions, percentages, percentile, and probability. For example, you might be given the mean and standard deviation of a normal distribution, and then asked to determine the percentile ranking for a given value. The percentile ranking is the percentage of the population below a given value.
For any of these types of problems, it is typically a good idea to:
Draw the normal distribution, adding a vertical line for the mean and the given value
Along the x-axis, mark the -2, -1, 0, +1, and +2 standard deviations.
Shade in the area of the normal distribution that is relevant to the problem. If at least half of the distribution or more is shaded, then note in the half of the distribution that is shaded that the area equals .500.
Calculate the z score.
Refer to the appropriate Z table (either 'Area Beyond Z' or 'Area Between the Mean and Z'). For example, if doing a percentile problem and at least half the distribution is shaded, then you will be adding .500 to the area you look up in the 'Area Between the Mean and Z' table. Given the z score, look up the proportion.
Update your drawing with the proportion you found in the Z table, and solve the problem.

To earn credit for this activity:
Click the 'Accommodations' button on the game menu.
Using the number pad (in the Accommodation dialog box), type the passcode provided by your instructor.
Click the 'Continue' button. Doing so will return you back to the game menu.
Then click 'Start' to begin the game.
When you complete the task with a score of 85% or greater, you will be given a completion code. To view this completion code, click on the 'Completion Code' button.
To get credit for having completed the activity, provide the completion code as your answer (e.g., to a quiz question). If the completion code is not yet available (e.g., performance was less than 85%), then click the 'Continue' button to re-do the activity.
Accommodations include:
Screen Reader (click the 'Screen Reader' button)
Unlimited decision time (e.g., Click the 'Accommodations' button, then type #17 by itself or at the end of a passcode. Click 'Continue').
Please notify your instructor if requesting these accommodations.
