Accommodations. Each game is ready to play, and includes a specified number of trials and available decision time. Several accommodations are available, including a simple voice system, additional time, etc.
Completion Codes. Please note that if you are playing the game in a class where a completion code is provided, to ask your instructor about the use of accommodations. Using an accommodation affects the completion code you are provided, and may therefore affect your score on your class quiz.
One basic accommodation is the Voice System. The Voice System serves as a screen reader. Please note that the availability of the Voice System may be affected by the browser/system/device used.
The Voice System assists with simple menu navigation and the playing the games. All game stimuli include alternative text, which can read aloud. When the Voice System is turned on, the player also has unlimited decision time.
Activate the screen reader by either clicking on the 'Screen Reader' button (on the game's welcome screen), or pressing the 'Tab' key on a physical keyboard during game play. Learn more about the Voice System.
For computer users, where there is a physical keyboard, you can:
Press "F" to select the option on the left side of the screen.
Press "J" to select the option on the right side of the screen.
This is simply "built in" and can be done at anytime. The other keyboard options work with the Voice System (and required that it is turned on).
Another basic accommodation is turning on unlimited decision time. During game play, pressing the left bracket '[' will turn on unlimited decision time. Pressing the right bracket ']' will return the game back to the specified decision times. The accommodation code #17 can also be used for unlimited decision time.
On the game menu, there is an accommodation button. Clicking on it will open the accommodation dialog box, where an accommodation code can be entered to modify game play.
The following accommodation codes will affect the decision duration. The decision duration represents the amount of time before feedback is provided (and the answer is marked as incorrect). The accommodation codes require the use of the actual '#' sign:
#10 Unlimited presentation time for stimuli with a language component
#11 Multiply decision duration by 1.5
#12 Multiply decision duration by 2.0
#13 Multiply decision duration by 3.0
#14 Multiply decision duration by 1.5 and unlimited time when there is a language component
#15 Multiply decision duration by 2.0 and unlimited time when there is a language component
#16 Multiply decision duration by 3.0 and unlimited time when there is a language component
#17 Unlimited decision time
Using either a basic accommodations (e.g., Voice System or keyboard modification of decision time) or an accommodation code will affect the completion code provided at the end of a successfully completed game. The use basic accommodations and accommodation codes will randomly add +/- one or two points to the completion code, which the instructor can take into account when 'grading' performance on a quiz in a course management system.
For example, as a result of using either a basic accommodation or accommodation code, the completion code of 153 could be subsequently changed to 154. Some course management systems allow an instructor to indicate that answers within a range are acceptable. With the Canvas CMS, the instructor could allow answers that are within +/- 2 points of the actual answer. Accepting a range of +/-2 around the exact completion code is how an instructor can approve the use of accommodations for all students.
Thus, an instructor can choose to allow basic accommodations and accommodation codes by setting up a quiz to allow for answers that are within +/- 2 points of the answer. And, the instructor can tell which students used an accommodation code or the voice system (because the student's answer will be marked correct, but won't match the exact answer).
