Goal(s): Ability to make predictions using a scatter plot with a best fitting line.
How: Each time you will be shown two scatter plots, pick the scatter plot that for a value of 80 miles, predicts a score of 120. The best fitting line (drawn though the data points) will help you with using scatterplots to make predictions. Make 30 quick decisions, with immediate feedback.

Using the Best Fitting Line (and our orange arrows), start with the value 80 and predict the score of 280.
Linear Relationship. A best fitting line is drawn through the points of the scatter plot. The line is drawn to minimize the total distance between itself and all of the points on the scatter plot.
Correlation. The closer the points are to the line, the stronger the correlation.
Predictions. When a perfect correlation exists, all the points fall directly upon the best fitting line. The best fitting line then describes perfectly the relationship between the two variables.
For the point on the Best Fitting Line with a known x value of 80, the predicted y value is 280.
(Known x, Predicted y). For any possible value along the x-axis (e.g., 80 miles), the best fitting line can be used to predict the corresponding value along the y-axis (e.g., 280 points). To do so, first start with the known value of x (e.g., 80 miles). Second, draw an imaginary arrow from the x-axis straight up to our best fitting line. Finally, draw another imaginary arrow to the left to the y-axis (e.g., 280 points). The point (80, 280) lies on the best fitting line. For someone who drove 80 miles, a score of 280 is predicted.

Optional: Earning Class Credit
To earn credit for this activity:
Click the 'Accommodations' button on the game menu.
Using the number pad (in the Accommodation dialog box), type the passcode provided by your instructor.
Click the 'Continue' button. Doing so will return you back to the game menu.
Then click 'Start' to begin the game.
When you complete the task with a score of 85% or greater, you will be given a completion code. To view this completion code, click on the 'Completion Code' button.
To get credit for having completed the activity, provide the completion code as your answer (e.g., to a quiz question). If the completion code is not yet available (e.g., performance was less than 85%), then click the 'Continue' button to re-do the activity.
Accommodations include:
Screen Reader (click the 'Screen Reader' button)
Unlimited decision time (e.g., Click the 'Accommodations' button, then type #17 by itself or at the end of a passcode. Click 'Continue').
Please notify your instructor if requesting these accommodations.
