Goal(s): Apply proportions to the normal distribution. Focus is on the center of the distribution. Related to the Empirical Rule.
How: For each set of normal distributions presented, pick the one with the shaded area matching the proportion stated (e.g., .68). Make 30 quick decisions, with immediate feedback.

Proportion and Percentages. A proportion ranges from zero to one. A proportion of one indicates the entire population. A proportion of .50 specifies half the population. A proportion of .25 indicates one fourth of the population. To present a proportion as a percentage, we multiple the proportion by 100. In this manner, a proportion of .25 becomes 25%. When discussing a population, it is common to use proportions or percentages.
Normal Distribution. A histogram is a graph that presents the data organized along an x-axis. Many histograms are bell shaped, like the one pictured here. The shape is seen so frequently that it is simply referred to as the 'Normal Distribution'.
Empirical Rule. When the shape of the distribution is normal, mean (μ) and standard deviation (σ) can given us powerful insights into the population.
For a normally distributed population, the Empirical Rule summarizes three important facts (presented as proportions): Approximately
~ .68 of the population occurs within one standard deviation of the mean,
~ .95 of the population occurs within two standard deviations of the mean, and
~ .997 of the population occurs within three standard deviations of the mean.
The Empirical Rule can also be stated using percentages, such that ~68% are within +/- 1 standard deviation, ~95% are within +/- 2 standard deviations, and ~99.7% are within +/- 3 standard deviations of the mean.
Note that "~" means approximately.

To earn credit for this activity:
Click the 'Accommodations' button on the game menu.
Using the number pad (in the Accommodation dialog box), type the passcode provided by your instructor.
Click the 'Continue' button. Doing so will return you back to the game menu.
Then click 'Start' to begin the game.
When you complete the task with a score of 85% or greater, you will be given a completion code. To view this completion code, click on the 'Completion Code' button.
To get credit for having completed the activity, provide the completion code as your answer (e.g., to a quiz question). If the completion code is not yet available (e.g., performance was less than 85%), then click the 'Continue' button to re-do the activity.
Accommodations include:
Screen Reader (click the 'Screen Reader' button)
Unlimited decision time (e.g., Click the 'Accommodations' button, then type #17 by itself or at the end of a passcode. Click 'Continue').
Please notify your instructor if requesting these accommodations.
