Goal(s): Apply proportions to the normal distribution. Focus is on the tails of the distribution. Related to hypothesis testing.
How: Each time that you are shown two normal distributions, pick the one with the correctly shaded region. Make 30 quick decisions, with immediate feedback.
Site: P2L.io
For this activity, the focus is on recognizing the proportion of the distribution that is highlighted.
In terms of proportions, we know that approximately .05 of the population is two standard deviations or further from the mean. That would be 5% of the population. We get this approximation from the Empirical Rule.
When later covering inferential statistics, we will assess whether a distribution is a good fit for our data; if the value (or sample mean) turns out to be in the outer 5% of the proposed distribution, then we reject the that distribution.
Focusing on proportions, can you recognize when the outer .05 is shaded?
