Goal(s): Gain experience with evaluating the null hypothesis. See what the Z Test measures.
How: For each scenario presented, evaluate the Z Test, and decide whether to reject the null hypothesis. Make 30 quick decisions, with immediate feedback.
Site: P2L.io
For this game, a red dot is used to represent the sample mean.
The distribution of sample means, as determined by the null hypothesis and sample size, is presented as a dotted normal curve. On the x-axis is marked the population mean and the distance from it in standard deviations (-3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3). The value of zero along the x-axis indicates the population mean, as specified by the null hypothesis.
We evaluate the distance between the sample mean and the population mean.
The Z test informs us how many standard errors there are between the sample mean and the null hypothesis (Ho) mean. If there is a good fit, such that the sample mean is somewhere in the middle of the null distribution, then we retain the null hypothesis distribution. When the Z test is ±1.96 or more extreme, then we reject the null hypothesis.
